The New December
Literally the darkest month of the year with its shorter days and colder nights, December also holds the holiday anticipation of parties, shopping and overall merriment. Whether you love or dread its extreme contrasts, we normally think of December as a busy month to "get through," reserving January for serious reflection and getting to our long list of self-help resolutions.
How about turning that familiar scenario on its head this year? Instead of waiting until "after the holidays," why not work on something in December you've already been putting off way too long? Here are some ideas for making the last month of the year a grand finale:
Reflect. Since December is always my slowest month for speaking, I'm setting aside entire days to work on my business by stopping to reflect and re-evaluate this past year and plan my strategies for the new one. Don't be afraid to value-and schedule-the real work of planning and review.
Connect. If you have pushed yourself hard all year, why not take some deserved time off to focus on connecting with the people you say are most important to you? Spending time with friends and family outside the holiday crush can add a warm glow to the year's end.
Act. Take one small step of action before January rings in the New Year. Go ahead and renew your membership at the gym, make an appointment with a financial planner, or have that crucial conversation with your spouse you've been meaning to have... As a bonus for those prone to holiday depression, taking action is a great mood lifter.
This December, how about putting your busy-ness on pause and taking time to make choices that are congruent with your needs and values as you've experienced them through the year? Then make sure to follow through with these Old Year's Resolutions in your work, your health, or with the people you care about most. Finish this year strong and you will have even more to anticipate in the new one.
Namaste,

Diane
