An Interesting Week
Have you ever had one of those weeks that leaves you feeling overwhelmed, overworked and overdone? Where nothing goes right and it just keeps building, going more wrong as the week progresses, and leaving you wondering "Why me?"
My week started with discovering the taxes I owed were a lot more than I expected, that an unsuccessful root canal would require extensive surgery, that the timing for a speaking event had changed after my flight reservations had been made, that three cases of my books had been shipped Express Mail to the wrong address, and that the educational credits required for my speaking certification had been miscalculated-and that was just on Monday!
As the week wore on, I announced to anyone who would listen, "I am having the week from ____". And guess what? I continued to have the week from ____. With each traumatic day I became more anxious-and more determined to do more to keep up, take charge and gain control.
So by week's end, as exhausted and discouraged as I was, I still dragged myself to a class I didn't think I had time or energy for. The class afforded me the breathing space to stop and reflect on what really was happening to me.
With a more peaceful perspective came the realization I'd brought most of the crisis events on myself-and that my attempts to "fix" things by doing more and trying harder had merely created new problems. After class, I found myself actually able to be grateful for a week that had successfully shifted from miserable to "interesting" as I gained insight into old patterns and new potential. And my interesting week reminded me that I always have the choice to shift my thinking and behavior-and therefore my experience.
The next time you find yourself feeling nothing is going right, having a week-or even just a moment from ____, instead of struggling, denying or telling everyone you meet how horrible you have it, stop for a moment (especially when you don't think you have time) and ask yourself not "Why is this happening to me?" but "What's really happening?" The answer could be quite interesting.
Warmly,

Diane
